UFC Fight Island 1 is filled with tons of news leading up to tonight’s event. Moving forward, the main event for tonight will feature 2 featherweights ranked in the top 10, Calvin Kattar vs. Dan Ige. Both fighters made weight and are ready to go. However, a few fighters on the undercard missed weight. Abdul Razak Alhassan weighed in 3lbs over, and Chris Fishgold tipped the scales at 149lbs for his featherweight bout. Both fighters will fight, and fined 20% of their purse. Lastly, The opening bout on the prelim card was scratched after Kenneth Bergh was deemed medically unfit to compete after a rough weight cut. Main Card (10PM, ESPN, ESPN+)

Featherweight Bout

“The Boston Finisher” Calvin Kattar vs. “50K” Dan Ige

Odds: Kattar (-325) Ige (+240)

The main event features a battle of top 10 Featherweights hoping to catapult themselves into the Top 5 rankings of the division with a win. Calvin Kattar comes in as the 6th ranked featherweight. The Boston Finisher lives up to his name as he’s defeated 10 opponents via Knockout. Kattar wanted to get a top 5 fighter after defeating Jeremy Stephens in May, but he’s excited to just fight in the octagon.

“You’ve got to take souls in this game, and I have an opportunity to go out and put a stop to his (Ige) six fight winning streak.”

Dan Ige is entering this fight after a split decision victory over Edson Barboza. Dynamite Dan is ranked 10th in the division, and hoping to climb further up the ranks after a victory at Fight Island. Ige is riding a 6 fight win streak, half of which came via decision. The Judo Brown belt hopes to use his wrestling background to control the fight on the mat. If not, Kattar could issue the knockout blow if they stay upright. Classic Boxer vs. wrestler matchup!

Prediction: Kattar via KO, 2nd Round

Flyweight Bout

Tim Elliott vs. “Babyface Ryan Benoit

Odds: Elliott (-140) Benoit (+112)

Tim Elliott steps into the octagon tonight on a 3 fight losing streak, yet he’s still ranked 12th in the Flyweight division. He suffered a devastating submission defeat to Brandon Royval in May. Oddly enough, after suffering his 3rd straight defeat, the UFC offered him a 4 fight contract, which he obviously accepted. Tim is hoping the new contract, and hopefully added motivation, will lift him to victory at fight island.

Tim hopes to carry superhero powers to the octagon.

Ryan Benoit makes a rare appearance in the cage tonight for the UFC. Benoit has only appeared in the octagon twice in the last 3 years. After numerous injuries, he’s ready to compete and add to his 8 knockouts in the cage as a professional fighter.

“I just want to be back to being busy.”

Prediction: Elliott via Submission, 3rd Round

Featherweight Bout

“El Terror” Jimmie Rivera vs. “Spartan” Cody Stamann

Odds: Rivera (-135) Stamann (+108)

Jimmie Rivera and Cody Stamann are set to do battle in the octagon with a future top 5 matchup on the table for both fighters. Jimmie Rivera is hoping to snap a 2 fight losing skid in the cage. Although he’s lost 3 of 4 fights, the competition has been top level talent. Rivera has lost unanimous decisions to current Bantamweight champion Petr Yan, and next in line, Aljamain Sterling. “El Terror” looks to get back in the win column for the first time in 2 years with a victory over Cody Stamann.

“The Spartan” is on a 2 fight win streak after a victory in the cage against Brian Kelleher. Cody might as well be labeled the Decision king. Every victory in his UFC tenure has come by way of the judge’s scorecards. The only blemish on his UFC record is a loss to Aljamain Sterling. Cody thinks he’s a well rounded fighter, unlike his opponent, and will come out victorious at Fight Island.

” I look at Jimmie like a dying breed in MMA.”

Prediction: Jimmie Rivera via Unanimous Decision
